Taa Daa: Crayon Art

We finally tackled a Pinterest project that's been on my to-do list for awhile.  I remembered it when I found this crayon melted on the deck box out back.

So we strapped some crayons to a canvas and set it out in the sun the next day for a more orderly melting endeavor.

Sadly, white canvas just doesn't heat up like black plastic and our crayons never melted.  So instead, I hot glued them to the top and took a hair dryer to those bad boys.  Here is the beautiful mess Noah and I ended up with.

He is proud to hang it in his room now.  We are thinking about what word/words he can add in the bottom right corner.  Taking suggestions if you have a bright idea for us. :)

Things we'll do differently next time.  And there will be a next time because Anna wants one in pretty colors. And I will probably want to make a nice one for Noah's room anyway.
  1. Use only brand new crayons, not used ones.  They will make straighter line drips instead of dripping to the left and right depending on how the crayon has already been worn down by use.  Also along those lines, will not use broken crayons.  Their short length allows them to melt higher up and then gather along the side of the longer crayons and mix in to the longer crayons drip paths.
  2. Will probably use smaller canvases so we can melt them in the oven more neatly.  The hair dryer wind sort of blew the drippings around, too.
  3. Double up crayons so their color shows up brighter in wider strips.
All in all, a fun project.  Noah was really impressed with how quickly it cooled and hardened so he could touch it again.
