Still Collecting!

It has been a MINUTE since my last Word Junkie drop!  Which is funny because I have been reading up a storm this year.  You would think I would have come across more new-to-me words.  Not so, apparently!  I DO, however, have full, full, full Commonplace Books where I have journaled a million beautiful, interesting, well-written quotes, phrases,  and words from my reading this year though.  Those I like to handwrite ... to savor and to save.  Anyway, here's the latest for my Word Junkie collection with faves in bold ...

  • saccade - rapid movement of the eye between fixation points
  • hegemony - leadership or dominance
  • shibboleth - a custom, principle, or belief distinguishing a particular group of people
  • percipient - having a good understanding of things; perspective
  • tendresse - fondness
  • anodyne - not likely to provoke dissent or offense; or a painkilling drug
  • doughty - brave and persistent
  • shadenfraude - pleasure derived from another person's misfortune
  • rictus - a fixed grimace or grin
  • soporific - tending to induce drowsiness or sleep
  • imbricate - overlap or cause to overlap
  • fettle - condition
  • torpor - a state of physical or mental inactivity; lethargy
  • theosophy - teaching about God and the world based on mystical insight
  • megillah - a long involved story or account
  • interlard - to intersperse or embellish speech or writing with different material
  • palaver - unnecessarily elaborate or complex procedure
  • freshet - a flood of a river from heavy rain or melted snow
  • pinko -  a person with left-wing or liberal views
