CaBiNeTs!

As long as we have lived here almost,  I have disliked our kitchen cabinets and wished for new ones.  Alas, that's pretty expensive.  Then two years ago I heard about a less expensive idea - to just reface the cabinets - after some friends did the same in their kitchen.  I was sold and held onto their contractor's contact info all this time.  This year, we finally were ready to go ahead and get it scheduled and done!

So with cabinet refacing, the guy measures, makes, paints, and installs the cabinet faces - complete with new pulls, quiet hinge systems, drawer faces, faux faces on the underside of the peninsula, new trim, etc.  Our job was to remove the old doors and prep and paint the boxes.  Upon removing the old cabinet doors, we realized the hinges left giant indentations in the frames of the boxes.  So those had to be sanded out.  A lot.  Needless to say, that created a big ole dusty mess.

 

We thought we'd save having to empty the cabinets by taping them off to keep the dust out.  That only helped a little.  Dust still got everywhere.  

 

Cabinets had to be entirely emptied in the end because we decided we wanted to paint the inside of the cabinets while we were at it.  Before this, only the cabinets on the very left had a smidge of paint.  It's like the previous owners thought about painting them all and then quit after starting.

They looked so great all done on the inside and ready to be reloaded! 

We took this opportunity to reorganize how our cabinets were being used and to throw out some stuff we didn't need taking up space.  Glad for that!  Next stop,  cabinet doors!

I picked out a simple white again(technically called cool grey, I have no idea why) because our kitchen is so small. White would be the most help opening up the space as much as it can.  I also went with a clean line shaker style door with pulls instead of knobs.  This was Allen halfway through the installation today.

Lasa noticed the new cabinet pulls right away.  She beelined it to her designated cabinet to play in - tupperware containers :} Adorable.

Old-school country curvy cabinets with chipped, painted over exterior hinges and many, many knicks, dings, and smudges on the doors that I will not post close-ups of.  Just trust me.  I believe the cabinet doors were original to the house, so just -  a lot of wear.  (this shot is actually from our last kitchen improvement years ago - the backsplash. :} )

Sleek straight shaker style trim and lines, sleek pulls instead of knobs, crisp clean white doors without 20+ years of wear and tear, and smooth interior hinges that shut the doors silently themselves!
It call come together so nicely, I think.
