Usually, I let Noah read through a chapter book of his choosing during his 20-30 minutes of silent reading every day. Over the holiday, he finished up his chapter book and we haven't been back to the library yet to get him a new title. So I took the opportunity this week to assign him some non-fiction books to read from instead. One on Vikings and another on Knights & Castles, as these are perfect supplements for what we are discussing in his History text. And it's funny how much more talking he does during his {silent} reading time than before. Stuff like ...
"Hey, mom! Did you know....?"
"Oh, wow. Listen to this! ..."
"I just read that... "
"Mommy, guess what!!"
This sort of interaction with the text is just music to my teacher ears. The comprehension checks it provides, the motivation it builds for more non-fiction reading, the curiosity it develops, the confidence with non-fiction text it bolsters, the love of learning it builds and the extra tid-bit supplements that support other learning we are doing. I almost hate that I haven't assigned more non-fiction books sooner this year! Might have to start staggering one book of my choosing after one chapter book of his choosing from now on.
OH My GOODNESS! Natalie would RATHER read Non-fiction books, ha! When we go tot eh library she picks out books on things she interested in...and just. like. you. All we hear for the next 3 days is "did you know!...." She knows all about her some animals! ha! Maybe she'll be into history before long too...she is always so curious to know if things in books are true or not...we did a story last night on the Widow's Offering in GA's...and she blurted out "did that really happen!!!!!!" haha! Love the minds of these little kids...have it mentioned yet that the ages of our babies are by far my most favorite so far! :)
ReplyDeleteand way to go Noah for being open minded enough to actually read and comprehend something he had not even chosen I always tell my girls try out my suggestions before they knock it! Great job Noah!
ReplyDeleteNoah would RATHER not read at all, so I have to make his read from EITHER category - ha! But yes - so satisfying to witness him enjoying it every time. Yesterday, he was amazed to learn that women fought it battle in the middles ages, too. Then he starts reading me a part about someone by the name of 'Joan of ...' "Arc" i say. And he's all, "How do YOU know about her?!?!" Hilarious.
ReplyDeletehaha!!!!!!!! Brooklyn marvels at things i know too! hahaha! But then she comes home talking about rocks and minerals, and I all "uhhhhhhh...." and the flip happens....she marvels that I can't even remember 3 rd grade science that she finds fascinating....
ReplyDeletetoo funny!
